The Importance of SMART Volunteering

Seniors & Persons with Disabilities
Northwoods Interfaith (NICE) recognizes that not everyone is surrounded by friends and family. Coordinators match people who need help with people able and wanting to provide help. The caregiver is removed enough from the situation that they don't need to feel overwhelmed with responsibility and the care receiver can request help knowing that they are not burdening someone.

Mileage reimbursement
Northwoods Interfaith (NICE) will reimburse you the cost of mileage at a rate of 40 cents per mile.

Automatic Liability Coverage
Northwoods Interfaith (NICE) will cover your approved volunteer work with liability insurance at no cost to you or the person you are assisting. The Seniors and persons with disabilities that you are helping now can sign up for services through NICE at no cost to them -and you can receive the coverage that you should have.

Rewards
The rewards of volunteering are immense - if you are not finding that to be the case Northwoods Interfaith will match you with the volunteer experience that fits just right.

Training
Northwoods Interfaith (NICE) is there to help you and give you information when the needs of your volunteer recipient exceed your knowledge. Support, advocacy & direction are not just available for the person needing a volunteer, but for the volunteer serving them as well.

Community Matters: When there are those within your community who are unable to maintain a comfortable quality of life, YOU are ESSENTIAL!

Common Myths about Volunteering

Myth #1:
Volunteering doesn't cost anything.

Fact: Driving 96 miles a week (round trip from Kelliher to Bemidji) will cost you about $285 annually.

Myth #2:
When doing a "good deed" for someone you are automatically covered by insurance.

Fact: There are law suits every year that result from "friends" finding themselves in bitter disagreements. Volunteering does not exempt you for that possibility.

Myth #3:
"Helping our own" is the most effective way of serving the needs of our communities.

Fact: Many of us don't know at least one of our closest neighbors and most of us see people in our neighborhood every day that we don't know. Our lifestyles have become transient - mom, dad and the family are no longer "just down the road from us". By helping "our own" we are missing the people not connected within our community.

Myth #4:
If we volunteer our time we are taking away a paid job from someone who needs it.

Fact: Our country is downsizing in every way possible in order to eliminate taxes. There has been a call from our national leaders to volunteer.
